PROJECT SCOPE
The Mackay Showgrounds Intersection Upgrade is located at the intersections of the Bruce Highway / Shakespeare Street and Bruce Highway / Mackay – Slade Point Road (Showgrounds) in Mackay
The project involved the provision of additional lanes and rehabilitation of existing asphalt surfacing elements of which generally included:
- Drainage works,
- Earthworks,
- Unbound pavement,
- Sprayed bitumen and
- Asphalt surfacing,
- Traffic signals,
- Road lighting,
- Road furniture, and
- Pavement marking.
The project involved numerous stakeholders including DTMR, Mackay Regional Council, The Mackay Show Association, local businesses and residents, to name a few.
Signalling change overs were complex and required well organised and managed traffic control switching. The staged approach adopted delivered all 3 no. intersections with no traffic impacts including a major change to the traffic flow to the major shopping centre of Canelands.
The asphalting works included a full highway diversion around the Mackay showgrounds. This allowed the finishing works to be carried out over a larger area and ultimately provided a higher quality finish than required under the contract.

Achievements
- Due to traffic accommodation restrictions, the NN4 pit could not be constructed as cast-insitu as initially detailed. Through close collaboration with DTMR and engagement of independent designers, Doval re-designed a precast solution successfully
- During the profiling operation, it was discovered that ‘biscuiting’ of underlying asphalt was compromising the integrity of the new asphalt. Doval identified and corrected all asphalt to ensure the integrity while still meeting the design finish levels
