The project involved the construction of a new Southbound slip lane for the Bruce Highway through Rockhampton and the upgrade of the existing intersection of George and Albert Streets.
The nature of the works included:
Of particular significance was managing the volume of traffic which travelled through the site each day (approximately 15,000 vehicles per day in both the North and Southbound directions). A strict curfew was identified at the time of tender where two lanes of traffic were required in both northbound and southbound directions between 6am to 9am and 3pm to 6pm. In addition to this, wide loads greater than 9m would need to travel through the site. This was managed by ensuring that the traffic management plan, whilst being in accordance with the MUTCD3, allowed for fast and effective temporary traffic control setup and removal.
Working within Rockhampton City also required that the works be constructed with as little impact on local residents and businesses as possible. This was managed through close consultation with residents and business owners prior to any works. A letter box drop would be sent out one week prior to any night works, and where accesses to properties and businesses needed to be temporarily closed, due to construction, they were reinstated that same night.
This project’s success was due to the good relationship and communication networks established and maintained by all parties over the duration of the works.
