Burnett River Bridge Replacement and Approaches

Project Scope

The project involved replacing the previously destroyed Burnett River Bridge on Monto Mount Perry Road. The existing 1941, 10 span timber bridge was washed away as a result of Cyclone Marcia in February 2015.

The project included a new 5 span, pre-stressed concrete bridge as well as the realignment of 1.5km of existing road to improve sight distances, gradients and drainage lines.

The nature of the works included:

  • 14 No. cast in-situ bored piles up to 18m in depth.
  • Approximately 500m3 of structural concrete works of select backfill material to the above structures
  • Excavation of 40,000m3 and embankment fill of 20,000m3
  • 2km of unbound pavement and bituminous seal
  • Installation of 10 no. culvert crossings, including 4x1500Ø pipe culvert crossing and a 2x1.2mx3m reinforced concrete box culvert crossing, together with associated headwalls
  • Of particular significance were the stringent environmental measures implemented under the project.

A number of sediment basins were constructed on site as well as the installation of an in-stream sediment barrier during construction of the bridge platform within the river. Weekly water monitoring testing was conducted to ensure neither the river system nor the endangered snapping turtle were being adversely impacted by the works.

Significant weed management controls were also implemented, including designated access routes and plant wash down facilities to prevent the spread of Parthenium.

Another challenging aspect of the project was the construction of pile caps below the water level of the Burnett River. This was successfully achieved through the construction of a sheet piled “coffer dam” and continuous dewatering through treatment tanks prior to discharge into the river.

The location of the site also necessitated detailed and advanced planning to mitigate logistical and procurement issues. In line with Doval’s Local Industry Participation Policy, local resources were utilised wherever possible and strong relationships established with local subcontractors and suppliers.

DTMR Contractor Performance Assessments under the contract scored the performance of Doval and the site team exceptionally highly.
